Aretha Franklin, Lyle Lovett to perform at White House

WASHINGTON -- Some of the nation's top recording artists are heading to the White House for a celebration of the role of gospel music in American music.

Aretha Franklin, Lyle Lovett, Shirley Caesar, Emmylou Harris, Michelle Williams and Darlene Love are among the artists expected to participate in Tuesday night's concert.

President Obama is scheduled to make brief remarks about gospel music's role in American music.

This event is the latest in the "In Performance at the White House" series that is broadcast by PBS television stations nationwide. The series has featured other genres, including jazz, blues, country, and has been produced by WETA since the Carter administration. Tuesday evening's performance marks the 54th production since 1978.

It will be streamed live Tuesday on the White House website, http://www.WhiteHouse.gov/live, and broadcast nationwide by PBS on June 26.

First lady Michelle Obama kicks things off in the morning with a workshop for middle school, high school and college students from around the country.
