Apple sets September date for iPhone 6 announcement, report says

Apple is planning on hosting a media event on Sept. 9, where it is expected to unveil the next generation of iPhone, according to a new report.

The date was first reported by Re/Code, which has a track record of reporting accurate details about Apple's plans but did not give any other details. If correct, the event will fall in line with other iPhone announcements held in mid-September in recent years.

The next iPhone -- unofficially dubbed the iPhone 6 -- is expected to come a choice of two sizes, 4.7 and 5.5 inches, though the larger of the two may be released later in the year. Apple has reportedly ordered 70 to 80 million units of the new iPhones by Dec. 30, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Re/Code report does not make note of a much-anticipated Apple wearable -- popularly called the iWatch -- being released, but previous reports have suggested that it may come out alongside the iPhone 6.
