Andy Cohen opens up about life, celebrity friendships in new book

Andy Cohen pleads the fifth, talks celebrity friends

Andy Cohen -- the mastermind behind the wildly popular "Real Housewives" franchise and host of late-night talk show "Watch What Happens Live" -- offers a glimpse into his celebrity-filled life in his new book.

"The Andy Cohen Diaries: A Deep Look at a Shallow Year" is inspired by "The Andy Warhol Diaries." The New York Times best-selling author gives a detailed diary of one year in his life, including his friendships with the biggest names in pop culture to his dating life.

Andy Cohen: New book is "chock-full of fun, dish and humor"

"Everyone who's in the book -- and there's a lot of people -- they seem to all be speaking to me," Cohen joked on "CBS This Morning" Friday.

But Cohen admitted there have been times where his comments have run him into trouble, including during one live appearance on "The View" with then co-host Barbara Walters.

Andy Cohen on worries over how celebrity friends will react to book

"She said she didn't get "American Hustle," and I said maybe it was a generational thing - which I said because my mom said she didn't get it a few days before," he explained. "It was scary."

Cohen also described another incident that happened right in the CBS newsroom, where he got his start as an intern in 1989. When a CBS News affiliate called, he asked, "Are you No. 1 in your market?"

"And they said, 'Yeah,' and I said 'Oh, we don't know anything about being No. 1 at the CBS morning show' -- loudly -- and the whole newsroom could hear. And someone said, 'you need to tone it down, literally,'" he recalled.

"I never totally toned it down but I feel like I learned a little bit," Cohen said.
