Amal Clooney to lecture at Columbia University this spring

Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney will join the faculty of Columbia University as a visiting lecturer.

Columbia announced Friday that Clooney will lecture on human rights this spring. She will also serve as a senior fellow with Columbia Law School's Human Rights Institute.

"It is an honor to be invited as a visiting professor at Columbia Law School alongside such a distinguished faculty and talented student pool," Clooney said in a statement. "I look forward to getting to know the next generation of human rights advocates studying here."

Clooney served as a senior adviser to Kofi Annan when he was the U.N.'s envoy on Syria.

She also represented WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in extradition proceedings.

Professor Sarah H. Cleveland, co-director of the Human Rights Institute, said Clooney's "extensive experience" will enrich the experience of Columbia's students.

Clooney married George Clooney in September in Venice, Italy.

The couple are based in London but he is filming "Money Monster" in New York this spring.

Jodie Foster is directing the movie and Julia Roberts co-stars.
