After a rain delay, Burning Man gets underway

RENO, Nev. - Organizers of Burning Man counterculture gathering say attendees can now head to a dry lake bed after spending the night in Reno parking lots.

The so-called "Burners" were turned back at the gate to the Black Rock Desert on Monday after rain turned the lakebed to mud.

Hundreds camped out overnight at the WalMart parking lot. Nearly a hundred other RVs pulled into the parking lot of the Grand Sierra Resort casino, across the street.

A woman from Oakland, California, who identified herself only as "Driftwood," said they're just trying to stay positive.

The weeklong desert gathering offers theme camps, art exhibits, all-night music and guerrilla theater. It culminates with the burning of a towering wooden effigy the night before Labor Day. A record 68,000 people attended last year.
