Ad war: Hillary Clinton aims for Donald Trump; Bernie Sanders stresses N.Y. roots
With the New York primary just eight days away, both Democrats Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are going on the air with new TV ads--and while Sanders is focusing on his New York roots, Clinton's turns toward the general election with a harsh criticism of GOP front-runner Donald Trump.
Clinton's ad, which begins airing in New York City Monday, uses video footage of Trump's more inflammatory comments--on abortion, immigrants and Muslims--to say the former secretary of state is the "one tough enough to stop Trump":
"He says we should punish women who have abortions ... that Mexicans who come to America are rapists ... and that we should ban Muslims from coming here at all," the ad's narrator says.
The ad then cuts to a shot of Clinton speaking at a rally. "Donald Trump says we can solve America's problems by turning against each other," she says. "It's wrong, and it goes against everything New York and America stand for."
Sanders, by contrast, is going positive in a spot that plays up his Brooklyn roots. Though he's represented Vermont for 25 years in the U.S. House and Senate, Sanders has been talking up his childhood in Brooklyn as he campaigns across the Empire State:
"Values forged in New York," the ad's narrator says, showing footage of Sanders' rally in the Bronx earlier this month. "Brooklyn-born. Native son who knows what we know: we are all in this together."
Polling in the race shows Clinton with an edge over Sanders. As the senator who represented New York for eight years, Clinton is expected to do well in next week's primary. A CBS News Battleground Tracker poll released last week found Clinton leading by 10 points, 53 percent to 43 percent for Sanders; one from Fox News released Sunday found her leading by 16 points.
