93-year-old Michigan woman a fitness inspiration

This woman is not your average gym rat

If you're looking for inspiration to push you through your dreary winter workouts, look no further.

Kaye Didas, 93, just completed her 1,000th workout at the Curves gym in Portage, Michigan.

"There is no excuse not to be active," Didas told CBS Kalamazoo affiliate WWMT-TV. "If you have a positive attitude, you can't miss."

Experts agree that weight training is a vital component to maintaining women's health as they age. Strength training can help preserve muscle mass and decrease the risk of developing osteoporosis.

Didas, a model of vitality, said she never really was an athlete, but she has been hitting the gym since the 1960s. Now she works the circuit at Curves three times a week, cheering on gym-goers half her age.

And nothing will stop her from staying active and healthy.

"I had a head that had two tumors on it that I had to have a brain operation," she said. "I had to take two months off, you know."

Didas was back working out as soon as the doctors gave her the green light.

At this age, Didas said, she's not chasing six-pack abs. She simply loves the community.

"There's always a smile and a hello, and that means a lot," Didas said.
