8th grade heavy metal band lands major record deal

What were you doing in eight grade? Probably not fronting a heavy metal band with a major recording contract that could net $1.7 million.

The Brooklyn, N.Y.-based trio Unlocking the Truth, who caught the attention of YouTube viewers, busked in New York City. The young guys even had a slot at Coachella. Oh yeah -- and opened for Guns N' Roses.

Now, according to the New York Daily News, guitarist Malcolm Brickhouse, 13, bassist Alec Atkins, 13, and drummer Jarad Dawkins, 12have inked a deal with Sony Music that could bring in $1.7 million.

Unlocking the Truth is reportedly receiving an advance of $60,000 for the first recording and possibly $350,000 for the next.

"If Sony sticks with them for all six albums, the kids could be raking in as much as $1.7 million," the Daily News notes.

"It's so exciting. We're jumping over the moon," Jarad's mother, Tabatha Dawkins, told the paper.

These kids can rock.
