Police said the 27-year-old man had just gotten behind the wheel at around 5:30 a.m., after eating at the all-night hot spot Cafeteria, in the city's Chelsea neighborhood. Surveillance video appears to show a man approach the driver and open fire, hitting the victim in his back and shoulder, investigators said.

"I heard five very loud gunshots and then the car pulled away, and going at a very fast speed, because you could hear the engine revving," witness Cara Craig told the station.

The victim was then seen speeding away in the wrong direction, but the red Bentley soon came to a stop.

CBS New York reports that the victim is believed to be the intended target and was known to frequent the restaurant.

He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
