4-year-old boy shoots self outside Mich. grocery store

TROY, Mich. -- A 4-year-old boy was hospitalized after he shot himself in the leg outside a grocery store in the suburbs north of Detroit, reports CBS Detroit.

A spokesperson from the Troy Police Department said the family was out shopping Friday afternoon when the accident happened. The boy's injury did not appear to be life-threatening.

A 7-year-old child who was also in the car was not hurt, according to the station.

Police say that while the parents were loading groceries into the back of the vehicle, the children were alone inside the car. The 4-year-old apparently found a gun in a compartment that was not secure, they added.

One of the parents has a permit to own a gun, but could reportedly face charges for not keeping it properly secured.

The investigation into the incident was ongoing, according to the station.
