2 small planes go into Pacific off Hawaii

Two pilots ditch planes in waters off Hawaii

HONOLULU -- Authorities say two small planes ran out of fuel and went into the Pacific off Hawaii, but all five aboard the aircraft survived.

The Coast Guard says the separate incidents Sunday involved a plane carrying a solo pilot 250 miles off Hawaii, and another with four people aboard just a few miles off shore.

The pilot traveling from Tracy, California, to Maui radioed authorities of plans to ditch because of dwindling fuel and the Coast Guard directed the pilot to put down near a cruise ship.

A special parachute was deployed in order to slow the plane's decent toward the water, reports CBS Honolulu affiliate KGMB-TV.

The ship then plucked the pilot to safety unhurt.

Hours later, a single-engine Cessna with four people on board crash-landed 11 miles off shore, says KGMB.

The pilot declared a flight emergency at 6:18 p.m. Sunday about 30 miles west of Oahu due to a fuel shortage, the Coast Guard tells the station.

Less than 10 minutes later, the flight disappeared from radar and lost communication with air traffic control.

A Coast Guard helicopter hoisted the three adults and one infant to safety.

Officials say all four were treated for minor injuries.

The plane was flying from Kauai to Oahu.
