2 officers wounded at Connecticut Navy base

GROTON, Conn. -- Authorities say two Navy civilian police officers were hurt while confronting a knife-wielding man at a Connecticut submarine base.

The man, who was "belligerent" and "brandishing a knife" according to a Navy statement, attempted to enter a pedestrian gate at the main entrance to Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton around 7 o'clock Thursday night.

An officer guarding the gate opened fire to stop the suspect.

Authorities say two other officers were injured. One suffered a minor stab wound to the leg and the other was hit by ricocheting bullets. They were taken to a hospital and released.

Officials say the suspect, who was not hurt, was taken into custody and turned over to Groton police. His name has not yet been released.

State and local police are investigating along with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and FBI.
