2 Nevada boys fall through ice into freezing water

RENO, Nev. - One of two boys who fell through the ice on a frozen lake in south Reno Thursday was submerged for more than a half-hour before he was rescued and taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

One of the youths was able to pull himself from the icy waters and call 911 shortly after noon.

But Reno police spokesman Tim Broadway said a 13-year-old boy was under the ice for 30 to 40 minutes before fire and rescue crews could locate him in the murky water about 25 feet off the shoreline in the small lake behind an apartment complex near Double R and South Meadows boulevards.

Broadway said the youth remained in critical condition Thursday evening in the intensive care unit at Renown Regional Medical Center.
