Maryland firefighter killed, 2 others wounded in shooting
TEMPLE HILLS, Md. --A firefighter died and another was critically wounded when they were shot Friday night while responding to a call for medical attention in a Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C.,CBS affiliate WUSA reported.
Prince George's County Fire/EMS spokesman Mark Brady said firefighters were responding to a welfare call at a single-family home in Temple Hills when they were shot around 7:30 p.m.
Police said a concerned neighbor called fire officials to check on the suspect, who the neighbor believed was having medical issues. When the suspect did not respond, the civilian and the firefighters tried to enter the home, at which point the suspect began shooting.
Authorities later announced that one of the firefighters, 39-year-old John Ulmschneider, died at Southern Maryland Hospital.
Ulmschneider was a firefighter medic and 13-year veteran of the fire department. He leaves behind a wife and a child, according to Deputy Fire Chief Benjamin Barksdale.

The other firefighter, whose name was not released, was flown to a trauma center in Baltimore. He was undergoing surgery and was listed in serious condition, Barksdale said.
The neighbor suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder and was in good condition.
The suspected shooter, an adult male, surrendered to police, Prince George's County police Chief Henry P. Stawinski III said at a news conference.
"He's being cooperative, and we are having a conversation with both him and the concerned resident who brought this circumstance to our attention," Stawinski said.
No officers fired their weapons and the firefighters were not armed.
A motive for the shooting was unknown.
