2 killed when plane crashes into Calif. apartment building

HAWTHORNE, Calif. -- At least two people were when a small plane crashed into an apartment building in Southern California on Friday evening, CBS Los Angeles reported.

The apartment building is located in the 4900 block of Broadway in Hawthorne, not far from the Hawthorne Municipal Airport.

A Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatcher said the two people who died were both on the plane. Residents of the building were all accounted for and no one else was hurt, the station said.

It was unclear if the plane was approaching the airport or had just departed.

The crash touched off a fire, according to CBS Los Angeles helicopter pilot Desmond Shaw. L.A. County firefighters and Hawthorne Police were both on scene.

FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer said only two people were aboard the Grumman American AA-1B. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the crash.
