2 hospitalized after shooting near gate at Arkansas air base

JACKSONVILLE, Ark. -- Military officials say two people are hospitalized after shots were fired when a civilian attempted to enter Little Rock Air Force Base.

The base went on lockdown after the incident around 9:15 a.m. Monday. A statement from the base said two people were taken to a hospital.

One of the injured was the suspect, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition, reported CBS affiliate KTHV reporter Laura Monteverdi via Twitter. The other person injured was reportedly a bystander.

Jacksonville Police Sgt. Dustin Brown said a civilian had attempted to gain access to the base, which is in Jacksonville and about 15 miles northeast of Little Rock.

A bomb squad was checking a green SUV parked near a visitor center at the base's main gate.

All buildings had re-opened by early Monday afternoon, but several gates remained closed, Monteverdi reported.
