2 earthquakes rattle area north of Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES -- Two earthquakes have struck north of Los Angeles, shaking parts of Ventura and Los Angeles counties, but fire officials say no significant damage took place.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude-4.3 quake hit at about 7:18 PST on Saturday and was centered close to 50 miles north of Los Angeles near the town of Castaic. It was originally measured as a magnitude 4.5, but later downgraded.

That quake generated more than a dozen aftershocks, according to seismologist Lucy Jones of the USGS, who said a magnitude-3.0 quake occurred near the same place about 20 minutes earlier.

The Los Angeles Times reported there have been three earthquakes of magnitude-3.0 or greater centered in the area over the last 10 days.

Earlier Saturday, no one was hurt when a 4.9 magnitude earthquake in a remote Idaho county triggered rock slides that blocked some roads. The quake was felt 200 miles away in Montana.
