1 dead in shooting at New Jersey college frat house

NEWARK, N.J. -- A shooting during an armed robbery at a fraternity house near the New Jersey Institute of Technology has left one person dead, reports CBS New York.

The shooting took place at Tau Kappa Epsilon in Newark before 3:30 a.m. Monday. Two men got into the frat house through an open back door, and when 23-year-old Joseph Micalizzi resisted, he was shot twice, according to police.

Micalizzi was taken to a nearby hospital, where authorities said he was pronounced dead about 90 minutes later.

"This is a tragic time for the student's family, friends and the entire NJIT campus and we extend our thoughts and prayers to all affected," the school's president, Joel Bloom, said in a statement posted to the school's Facebook page.

The New Jersey Institute of Technology is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the successful prosecution of the individual or individuals responsible, Bloom said.
