1 dead, children among critically injured in "horrific" Fla. shooting

SANFORD, Fla. -- Investigators say one person is dead and five others – including two young children – are critically injured following a central Florida shooting.

Sanford police spokeswoman Bianca Gillet tells local news outlets that four people were shot in a house in Sanford, northeast of Orlando, early Monday in what appears to be a domestic violence incident. The gunman, whose name has not been released, then drove to another location and shot two innocent bystanders, both of whom were taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital, police said.

Sanford police tell CBS affiliate WKMG the suspect was in a “domestic relationship” with an adult in the home, and described the victims inside the home as a family.

Gillet said the children are ages 7 and 8, and that all five of the wounded victims are in critical condition.

When the gunman opened fire at the second location, Gillet says a police officer heard the shots and was able to capture the suspect. A weapon was found.

“There was a brief moment he attempted to flee, but he went into custody willingly,” Gillet told the station.

The names of the shooting victims haven’t been released.

“I can’t stress enough that this scene is one of the worst that our officers and investigators have ever responded to,” Gillet told WKMG. “It’s horrific.”
