According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the crash happened at around 1:30 p.m. on eastbound I-94 near the County Road 19 exit.

Most of those involved in the accident suffered no apparent injuries or non-life threatening injuries, except for the passengers of one car, driven by a 63-year-old woman from Winnipeg, Canada. Riding in that car was the woman's 38-year-old daughter, Erin Bateman, who was killed, and a 10-year-old girl, Elizabeth Sabourin, who suffered serious injuries.
