Wounded Veteran Gets $100,000 Over Plumbing Company Firing

PLYMOUTH, Minn. (AP) — A veteran who was wounded in Iraq and fired from his job at Roto-Rooter in a Twin Cities suburb is getting $100,000 from the plumbing company per the terms of a federal agreement.

The conciliation agreement says Roto-Rooter Services must pay the veteran $100,000 to settle accusations of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act. The company and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission signed the agreement Friday.

Julie Schmid, the agency's acting director in Minneapolis, said the veteran had worked at the company's Plymouth office and returned from Iraq in 2009 with back, leg and head injuries. She said the company refused to put the veteran in a job resembling one he previously had.

A Roto-Rooter corporate spokesman said the company is complying with the agreement and is glad the case is resolved.
