Women's Advocates Co-Founder Killed In Cuba Crash

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A co-founder of Women's Advocates in St. Paul was killed in a car accident this week in Cuba, the organization confirmed on Thursday.

Details of the crash aren't known, but Executive Director Babette Jamison confirmed that Sharon Rice Vaughan was struck by a vehicle while in Cuba and died from her injuries. Details on why she was in Cuba have not been released.

Women's Advocates, Inc., released a statement on Vaughan's death on Thursday.

"It is with deepest regret that we inform you of the loss on one of our founders, Ms. Sharon Rice Vaughan. We send our heartfelt sympathy to her family and friends. She was a true inspiration and will be greatly missed," the statement reads.

Women's Advocates, Inc., is an organization in St. Paul that provides several resources to Twin Cities women and children, including shelter and support, to live a life free from violence.

The accident is under investigation.
