Woman Found In Submerged Car Identified

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WCCO/AP) — Authorities in La Crosse, Wis., said the body of a 21-year-old Winona State University student was found Wednesday after her car went through the ice in a creek.

Police and fire departments in La Crosse were called to an accident at about 1:27 a.m. Wednesday, New Year's Day, after a report of a vehicle in the water in Swift Creek. A bus driver called dispatchers Wednesday about 1:30 a.m. when he noticed tire tracks leaving the street and heading over the 40-foot embankment.

Authorities used underwater cameras to find the car in about six to eight feet of water. The victim and the car were pulled from the water at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. The victim was identified by authorities as Ellen Marie Ahmann of Woodbury.

What led up to the accident is still under investigation.
