Minn. Senate Candidate Invokes Free Recount Right After Loss

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A Minnesota Senate candidate says he'll exercise his right to a free recount after losing by an unofficial 142 votes.

Dan Wolgamott said Friday via the Senate DFL Caucus that he'll formally request a recount in his central Minnesota race after the State Canvassing Board certifies the results on Nov. 29.

Republican Jerry Relph led the election night count, but the result was the closest Senate race in Minnesota. State law allows a trailing candidate to request a free recount when the margin falls within one-half of 1 percent.

The Senate DFL says another Democrat — Deb Calvert, who trailed by 201 votes in a Plymouth-area race — will also invoke a free recount.

Absent a rare reversal, Republicans will hold a majority of just one seat in the Senate.
