Gov. Walker Claims Nothing Illegal About Campaign Donations

EDGERTON, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Scott Walker says there was nothing illegal about campaign donations from corporate leaders given to a conservative group that helped him and Republican legislators fend off recall challenges.

Speaking on WTMJ-AM Thursday, Walker responded to a report in the Guardian, a British newspaper that obtained more than 1,000 pages of leaked documents from a secret investigation into whether Walker's campaign illegally coordinated with outside conservative groups. The so-called John Doe investigation was halted in 2015 by the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

The Republican governor cited court rulings that shut down the investigation, including at the circuit level, "because it clearly didn't show anything illegal."

Prosecutors have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to let them re-start the investigation. Justices will consider that request on Sept. 26.
