FBI: Phone Scam Targets Wisconsin College Students

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The FBI in Wisconsin is warning college students to be aware of a phone scam that targets them and uses the agency's phone number on caller ID.

Students at various universities in Wisconsin and their parents have alerted investigators about the scam calls that come from someone claiming to represent the federal government. The caller threatens to arrest the students if they don't pay delinquent taxes, student loans or overdue parking tickets.

The FBI says the fraudsters are using the agency's Wisconsin phone number which appears on the students' caller ID. The scammers attempt to solicit personal information from the students.

The FBI says it will never call private citizens asking for money. If students get a suspicious call, the FBI says they should hang up and notify law enforcement.
