Wisconsin GOP Leader Says Impeachment Push Helps Trump

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Republican legislative leader says attempting to impeach President Donald Trump will only bolster his support among GOP voters and ensure he will win Wisconsin.

State Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said Thursday at a WisPolitics.com event that he thinks support for Trump in the state is stronger than in 2016. Trump won Wisconsin by less than a point and both sides see the state as key to his re-election hopes.

Fitzgerald is running for Congress next year and says he thinks the Democratic effort to impeach Trump will backfire. He says Trump voters are "fired up" because of impeachment and his support is stronger in suburban Milwaukee counties than in 2016.

Democrats argue that their voters are so motivated to defeat Trump he will be denied re-election.
