Former Governor, Senator Wendell Anderson Remembered At Memorial Service

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minnesotans came together today to remember former governor and U.S. Senator Wendell Anderson Monday afternoon.

Anderson, who was a memeber of the DFL party, passed away last month after spending months in hospice care.

Anderson rose to national prominence after appearing on one of Time Magazine's most famous covers: "The Good Life in Minnesota." He was hoisting a large northern pike out of a Minnesota lake.

"Whether the fish was actually caught in that moment, or had been previously chilled in somebody's freezer, has been rumored but never substantiated," Gov. Mark Dayton said, to laughs from the crowd. "Either way, it was a great picture. Time's article was as laudatory of Wendy as any I've seen about any governor -- certainly better than any of mine."

Anderson was also a member of the 1956 silver medal U.S. Olympic hockey team.

He died at the age of 83.
