Get Your Shovels Ready: We're In For A Snowy Weekend

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A winter storm could dump several inches of snow on the Twin Cities this weekend.

Heavy snow already fell across the Midwest and East Coast this week, causing huge pileups on the roads. While less than a half-foot of snow is forecast in the Twin Cities, southern Minnesota could wake up to eight inches of snow by Sunday morning.

WCCO Meteorologist Chris Shaffer says clouds from the system will first hit southwestern at around 11 a.m., with clouds covering the Twin Cities at around 6 p.m. and the first flakes falling about two hours later. Snowfall will start to get heavy in the Metro at around 10 p.m. and continue all through the night and early morning.

All in all, Shaffer says the northern parts of the Twin Cities will see less snow -- 1 to 3 inches -- and the southern suburbs will see totals between 3 to 6 inches. South of that, more than a half foot of snow is possible in some areas, and the National Weather Service has already issued winter weather advisories in the area.

The cold will be a big problem too -- highs in the early part of next week are forecast in the single digits, with "feels like" temperatures hovering well below zero.
