Veterans Day Celebration Focusing On 100th Anniversary Of WWI Armistice
INVER GROVE HEIGHTS, Minn. (WCCO) -- The bells at the Hennepin County Courthouse in Minneapolis rang from noon to 1 o'clock to honor Veteran's Day.
Sunday marked the 100th Anniversary of Veterans Day, which is celebrated on the date the Treaty of Versailles was signed to end World War I.
The State of Minnesota held its celebration in Inver Grove Heights, and as WCCO's Katie Steiner tells us, Veterans there were feeling the love.
In Inver Grove Heights, hundreds gathered to honor Veterans Day.
"Today is huge for veterans. It's the one day a year we formally recognize the service and sacrifices of our Veterans," Mike McElhiney said.
The day started with a breakfast and ended with a program, honoring those who have served this country.
One of the veterans at the breakfast, Larry Nyberg, comes to this event every year. He served in the military for 22 years.
"It's an honor to be here, to see all the other Veterans, and just to be recognized. I think that's the main thing. That they appreciate the service that I put in," Nyberg said.
But that support hasn't always been there. Just ask Ed Adrian.
"Back when I was in the service, it was during the Vietnam Crisis. And there wasn't as much support, and it was completely different. And I think it's great now that they support and back up our veterans now and take care of them," Adrian said.
But now, on the 100th Anniversary of Veterans day, those who've served are feeling the love of an entire country.
