Minn. UW-Madison Students Urged To Get 2nd Bacterial Meningitis Vaccine

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minnesota students attending the University of Wisconsin–Madison are being urged by health officials to get a second round of vaccinations while on winter break.

The Minnesota Department of Public Health says students should make an appointment to get another dose of a meningococcal B vaccine after a recent outbreak of bacterial meningitis on campus.

Most students originally received a dose of Bexsero in Madison, and those Minnesota students -- estimated at 2,000 -- should tell their doctors to give them the same drug again. The doses need to be taken within a couple months of each other for complete protection.

About 70 percent of the student body received the first round of vaccinations.
