UMN Twin Cities Superblock Dorm Buildings Reopened After Evacuation Due To Gas Odor

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities evacuated its "Superblock" dormitories due to a gas odor Monday afternoon.

By Monday evening, the Superblock had completely reopened.

According to a safety alert from the university, the gas odor was reported at 2:12 p.m. in the Superblock area, including Frontier Hall, Territorial Hall, Centennial Hall and Pioneer Hall.

Everyone in those buildings was asked to evacuate.

According to fire officials, the odor is likely sewer gas.

"After the sewer drain was flushed it was reported that the sewer gas odor is traveling through the sewer drains and permeating to other buildings," the Minneapolis Fire Department said.

Fire crews and CenterPoint are getting calls due to the sewer gas odor.
