UMD Student Who Suffered Frostbite Gets New Hand

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A University of Minnesota-Duluth student who suffered severe frostbite is getting a new hand. Alyssa Lommel tweeted a photo from Instagram Monday night of her fitting.

She wrote, "The final prototype of my hand. This is just the first step to making my actual hand that I will be going home with on Friday."

Earlier on Monday, she tweeted another photo and wrote, "Another step."

Last winter, doctors had to amputate all 10 fingers and part of her foot after police say she spent the night outside after a night of drinking.

Lommel had been out drinking with friends on Dec. 6 and was dropped off at her Duluth house around midnight. A passer-by spotted Lommel on the front stoop of the house next door about nine hours later. The temperature had dropped to 17 degrees below zero that night.
