'U' Study: Energy Drinks Lead To Other Unhealthy Habits

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- We've already heard that sports and energy drinks aren't exactly healthy choices, but a new study from the University of Minnesota has now linked them to other vices.

Researchers said teenagers who have one of those drinks at least once a week are more likely to smoke cigarettes. They were also found to spend more time playing video games or watching TV.

The study surveyed 2,800 middle school and high school students from around the Twin Cities. About 38 percent said they had a sports drink at least once a week. About 15 percent said they consumed energy drinks at least once a week.

The findings are troubling because they suggest that these beverages are part of a group of behavioral choices that lead to poorer overall health.
