U Researcher Finds 1 In 4 Veterans Don't Have Consistent Access To Food

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A study led by a University of Minnesota researcher has found that one in four veterans who served in Afghanistan and Iraq is going hungry, as they don't have consistent access to food.

The study, led by Rachel Widome, is to be published in the journal Public Health Nutrition, a university spokesperson said.

Widome and researchers who worked on the study also found that not having access to sufficient food is a prevalent problem among the newest veterans and that veterans who are younger, in poor health and living alone are more likely to be food insecure.

"It is unacceptable that so many men and women who fought for our country struggle to afford food now that they are back home," Widome said, in a statement, adding: "We hope this research prompts discussion on how to help veterans currently struggling to access food."

The study was done in collaboration with the Minneapolis Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care System researchers, the spokesperson said.
