U of M warns students of fireworks assault in Dinkytown

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota issued a safety notification overnight after assaults occurred in Dinkytown.

The university told students to be cautious.

The alert came out at 1:51 a.m. Sunday and said the victims had been struck by fireworks.

The alert said that the suspects are a group wearing black hooded sweatshirts and masks.  

Officers from MPD say they received a report of fireworks being fired at structures and a group gathering in a parking lot shortly before midnight on the 1600 block of University Avenue Southeast. They arrived within five minutes of the report, but the parking lot was empty.

Two hours later, officers responded to a report of a group of men throwing fireworks at people on the 1200 block of 7th Street Southeast. Police say they identified a man with non-life-threatening injuries possibly resulting from the incident, but he refused medical and police services.

Around 2:42 a.m. police received a report of a group banging on windows and shooting firecrackers at people on the 1200 block of 4th Street Southeast. When officers arrived they say the crowd dispersed.
