U Of M Bee Expert Wins Siehl Prize For Agriculture

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — An internationally renowned bee expert is one of three recipients of the prestigious 2016 Siehl Prizes for Excellence in Agriculture from the University of Minnesota.

Marla Spivak was announced Wednesday as the laureate in the knowledge category. Thanks to her leadership, a new bee and pollinator center will open on the St. Paul campus this year.

Mark Davis, former CEO of Davisco Foods International, is the winner for agribusiness. He started as a milk truck driver for his family's creamery and led its expansion into a multinational company known for its innovations in the dairy industry.

Pork producer Don Buhl is the laureate for production agriculture. He's been a leader in state and national pork organizations over the past three decades.

The $50,000 prizes will be presented May 26.
