Twins' Hughes Leaves After 5 Innings With Hip Flexor Strain

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Twins right-hander Phil Hughes has a mild strain of his left hip flexor muscle.

Hughes started for the Twins on Wednesday against Detroit. He finished five innings before being removed. Hughes left with the Twins ahead, the first lead he'd pitched with this season, but relievers Tim Stauffer and Aaron Thompson let the Tigers tie the game in the sixth.

Hughes threw 71 pitches, striking out four while allowing seven hits. The Twins announced the nature of his injury two innings later.

Hughes has not won yet this year.

Twins center fielder Jordan Schafer was also hurt and left the game early. He stumbled on his turn toward second base after a bunt single in the sixth and was replaced by pinch-runner Shane Robinson.
