Twins: GM Terry Ryan Diagnosed With Cancer
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Minnesota Twins announced Monday, just a few days away from pitchers and catchers reporting for spring training, that General Manager Terry Ryan has been diagnosed with cancer.
Team officials said the diagnosis came during a routine physical as the team physician found a lump on Ryan's neck. A biopsy confirmed that it was cancerous, and doctors determined it was Squamous Cell Carcinoma. It appears the cancer is confined to his neck and has not spread.
Ryan said in a statement that he's being treated at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and Minnesota Oncology, that the cancer is treatable and that he's optimistic he'll return to good health. Twins officials said Ryan will not be in Fort Myers, Fla., as the team starts Spring Training.
"My family and I would like to say thank you to Dr. Eyunni as well as the doctors and medical staff at the Mayo Clinic and Minnesota Oncology. In addition, we are grateful for the many friends and colleagues who have sent their well wishes and support throughout this challenging time. It's my intention to see you back at the ballpark as soon as possible," Ryan said in a statement.
