State Patrol: Driver Collides With Trooper's Car, Drives Off With Toddler Inside

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minnesota State Patrol says a 25-year-old man collided with a trooper's squad car Thursday afternoon and fled with a child inside.

According to the state patrol, the incident occurred on Polk County Road 1 at 220th Avenue Southeast, near Fosston, around 12:42 p.m.

There, a state trooper was traveling northbound on the county road when a Dodge Ram truck traveling northbound on 220th Avenue failed to yield the right of way to the trooper. That caused the squad car to hit the truck, sending both vehicles into the northwest ditch.

The state patrol says the truck driver -- identified later as 25-year-old Michael Finn of Winger, Minnesota – then fled in his truck. A 25-year-old Mahnomen woman and a 3-year-old child were also inside the truck.

According to reports, Finn was later apprehended.

The trooper, identified as 37-year-old Matthew Hitchen of Thief River Falls, suffered non-life threatening injuries.

There were no other injuries.
