Tribute Planned For Flip Saunders At Timberwolves Home Opener

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – It's been a week since Timberwolves Head Coach Flip Saunders passed away.

Those close to him celebrated his life in a private funeral in Plymouth over the weekend. Now, the team has something planned for their home opener Monday evening.

After their first two games of the season on the road, the Timberwolves home opener takes center stage at the Target Center Monday.

Tip-off is at 7 p.m. against the Portland Trail Blazers

Prior to tip-off, in honor of Saunders, the team will play a video tribute featuring Saunders' friends, family, former colleagues, former teammates and players.

The team will debut the FLIP patch that they will wear on their jerseys all season long.

The NBA Coaches Association also announced that all the league's coaches will wear a "Flip" lapel pin during all games this season to honor Saunders' dedication to the game.

Fans are encouraged to arrive at the game early to see the tribute, as well as receive a magnet with the 2015-16 season schedule on it.

For fans who are unable to make it to the game, or want to start celebrating early, a free breakfast is being offered in the skyway. The breakfast will take place from 6 to 9 a.m. in the Mayo Clinic Square Skyway.
