Trench Collapse At Lakeville Construction Site Kills 1

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A man could not save his brother Tuesday after a trench they were digging collapsed.

It happened around 3:45 p.m. at a construction site near 179th Street and Hide Park in Lakeville.

Authorities say the two brothers, later identified as  51-year-old Gerald Lyle Thompson and 54-year-old Dennis Richard Thompson, were using a backhoe to dig a 6- to 8-foot trench when it collapsed, trapping Gerald.

Workers building a home nearby tried to rescue Gerald, but couldn't pull him out in time.

It took workers more than three hours to stabilize the trench and recover his body.

The accident is under investigation.
