Target Extends Return Policy To 1 Year On Company Brands, Gift Registry

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Target Corp. announced Wednesday that the discount retailer is expanding its return policy from 90 days to one year for purchases of all Target-owned and exclusive brands.

Effective immediately, Target shoppers will be able to return select brands with a receipt to a get a full refund on an item within a year of buying it. Shoppers who use the Minneapolis-based retailer's REDcard will also get an additional 30 days to return purchases.

"Our enhanced return policy offers our guests convenience we think they'll appreciate, while providing additional assurance of the quality of owned and exclusive brands found only at Target," said Kathee Tesija, the company's chief merchandising and supply chain officer, in a press release.

Some of the brands included under the Target-owned umbrella are Archer Farms, Cherokee, Merona, Liz Lang, Mossimo, Xhilaration, and various seasonal products.

The company also announced Wednesday that there's a one-year return guarantee for those using Target's gift registry service. Consumers will be able return most new, unopened items at any Target up to one year after the designated event. Previously, the return period for gift registry items was 90 days.

To make a registry return, customers must use a gift receipt or show their gifts purchased list, which can be printed inside any Target store.

The return policy changes come on the heels of massive job cuts at Target headquarters in downtown Minneapolis. Earlier this month, the company cut 1,700 jobs and said it would permanently close another 1,400 positions.

Target officials said the cuts were needed to make the company more agile in competing with other retail giants, such as Amazon.com.

Last month, the company also slashed its free shipping minimum to $25 in order to better compete in the online market, a key area where officials say the company seeks to grow more competitive.
