Talking With The Minn. Couple Behind America's 1st Gay Marriage

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – After years of not giving interviews, the Minnesota couple behind America's first gay marriage is sharing their story.

Earlier in the week, Esme Murphy reported on Michael McConnell and Jack Baker. The two obtained a marriage license in 1971 in Blue Earth County and that led to a decades-long legal struggle that went all the up to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Murphy sat down with them on Sunday morning, and the two explained how they obtained their marriage license, how they felt when gay marriage was eventually legalized in Minnesota, and how they are still fighting to get Blue Earth County to recognize their union.

McConnell and Baker have also written a book, entitled "The Wedding Heard 'Round the World," and they've donated their archives, which consist of thousands of letters, to the University of Minnesota.
