Suspect Awaiting Charges In Wis. Deputy Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Doug Nitek sat in a Wisconsin jail cell Monday, accused of shooting and killing a sheriff's deputy over the weekend.

The shooting happened late Saturday night in Rusk County, Wisconsin, just north of Eau Claire. Rusk County Deputy Dan Glaze, 33, was responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle.

He used his radio to report that he had found the vehicle in a field, but his co-workers lost contact with him.

When backup arrived, they found Glaze dead inside his car.

A manhunt for Nitek lasted all through the night and ended Sunday morning in nearby Barron County.

"It's troublesome. It's hard," said Jessa Thorpe, of Ladysmith, Wisconsin, where the shooting happened. "We're a small community. We've been impacted greatly. We're all mourning the loss of what's happened here in the last 24 hours and I think that as a community, we need to stand strong and protect those who protect us."

Nitek is in jail, awaiting formal charges.
