Young Brain Cancer Survivors Aim To Raise $100K For Research

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Three kids touched by brain cancer have come together to fight for a cure. "Super Kids Who Never Quit" are throwing a Super Hero Carnival to raise $100,000 to find a cure.

The three Super Kids in capes have a drive within them.

"I just want to find a cure for cancer," 8-year-old Nevaeh Belker said.

Nevaeh, Gavin and Dom formed a friendship during some of their toughest days. Nevaeh and Gavin both battled brain cancer.

"I've had a brain tumor cancer, so have some other friends of mine, but sadly they didn't make it," 10-year-old Gavin Pierson said.

Dom's younger brother went through chemotherapy at the same time. Vito died last year. Dom carries the same gene mutation.

"I don't want anyone to go through any of the pain my family went through," 10-year-old Dom Skaro said.

And that's why the 8 and 10-year-olds are dedicated to raising money and awareness.

"I went through cancer and Jesus left me on this Earth to help find a cure for other kids," Belker said.

The Super Kids have spent their summer selling lemonade, bagging groceries and mowing lawns, working toward their $100,000 goal.

"We're raising money for brain tumor research and making sure that everyone is having a good life," Pierson said.

Their efforts will culminate with a Superhero Carnival, so others can join in their journey.

"If there's one thing I'll end my life doing it's finding a cure," Skaro said.

The Superhero Carnival is Thursday, Aug. 4 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Oxbow Elementary School in Champlin. People are asked to come dressed as their favorite superhero.

All of the money raised for Children's Cancer Research Fund will go directly to a doctor at the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Center who is studying Medulloblastoma. That's the type of brain cancer Nevaeh has fought, and the type Vito had.
