The incident happened at about 12:44 p.m. in a boys' bathroom at the school. A staff member at the school notified the Faribault Police school resource officer that one student had shot another with a BB handgun. The school went into a lockdown as a result and the suspect, a 12-year-old student, was located by the teacher within minutes.

The student told the school's resource officer and the staff member that he used a BB handgun. It was found in a backpack in his locker. The boy was arrested and taken to a secure juvenile facility pending criminal charges.
