MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A state trooper and a driver are recovering Saturday after an early morning crash sent them to the hospital.

According to Minnesota State Patrol, troopers went to check on an unoccupied, stalled car on eastbound Interstate 94 around 3:23 a.m. Saturday.

The stalled car was blocking the left lane from entering the southbound Highway 61 ramp.

Upon arrival to the scene, the trooper pulled the car to the shoulder and activated the emergency lights.

While stopped, another car traveling eastbound on I-94 struck the trooper vehicle from behind.

Jack Tiegs, of Oakdale and 46-year-old Jay Binnebose, of Maplewood, were both sent to Regions Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said alcohol was a factor in the crash.
