State Says Home Care Nurse Neglected Man Who Died

ROSEVILLE, Minn. (AP) — A Twin Cities home health care agency says it has taken corrective steps following the death of a man who was in the care of one of its nurses.

The Minnesota Department of Health found the unidentified patient had not been given a checkup for months by the nurse assigned to his home care, was "profoundly" malnourished and had a severe blood infection when admitted to the hospital last July. The patient died two weeks later.

One of Interim HealthCare's owners, Tom Geary, said Wednesday that the agency has retrained staff on assessing a client's well-being. Geary says the company worked with the health department to make other policy improvements as well.

The health department's report says the nurse that cared for the patient who died was fired and was reported to the Board of Nursing.
