State Patrol: Driver Fleeing Police In Crookston Dies In Fiery Crash

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A driver fleeing police died after hitting a bridge pillar in a fiery crash in Crookston Sunday night, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Authorities said the incident happened at about 6:03 p.m. on Highway 2 at Main St. N. Crookston Police were called to do a welfare check on a 27-year-old Crookston man and after initial contact, the man hit a Crookston Police squad car with a pick-up truck and fled the scene.

The truck went into the city of Crookston at a high rate of speed with officers in pursuit. The truck then crashed into a cement bridge pillar at Highway 2 and Main St. N., causing the vehicle to catch fire. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries in the crash and fire.

The man was identified as Dominic A. Herkenhoff. The incident remains under investigation.
